The Ford Airstream concept is powered by a HySeries Drive powertrain (a version of this is also in the Edge prototype that will be unveiled later this month in D.C.). The HySeries Drive is battery-powered, with plug-in capability and has a hydrogen fuel cell as an on-board charger that get equivalent fuel economy rating of 41 mpg. On all-electric power, the Airstream concept can go 25 miles. With adding some hydrogen and you can go another 280 miles. The fuel cell, made by Ballard, turns on automatically when the battery charge dips below 40 percent. With the on-board charger (110/220 VAC), the battery pack can be refilled at home. “This advanced fuel cell system is half the weight and cost of today’s fuel cells and can operate in the dead of winter,” Ford said in a statement. “That’s a major step forward because today’s fuel cells don’t do well when the mercury dips below freezing.”
Furthermore, the exterior of the Ford Airstream is resplendent in reflective paint, and there are 12 rivets adorning the structure and giving a nod to Airstream. The clamshell passenger door looks great & stylish. In addition, you can find an inviting cabin with pod chairs up front and sofa-like seating in the back. A dashboard-mounted, dual-view screen relays information as well as images from exterior cameras to the driver while allowing the front passenger to watch DVD.
